¡¡¡¡Maoming City is located in the southwestern part
of Guangdong Province. Its geographic coordinate lies at east longitude
100 190 ¡ª 1110 410 and north latitude 210 220¡ª 220 420. It adjoinsYangjiang
to the east and Zhanjiang to the west and borders on Yunfu and Guangxi
to the north, with a total area of 11,458 km2 , approximately 6.4%
of that to Guangdong Province. |

¡¡¡¡About 4500 years ago (the late time of Neolithic Period), there
lived in Maoming many natives. They had begun to create human civilization
here. In the Xiashang Period (21st century B.C to 11th century B.C),
the natives successively united as an ally, becoming part of the
Nanyue minority (The original Yue minority was historically named
as Li minority). After Qin Dynasty unified China, the Area belonged
to Nanhai Prefecture, Xiang Prefecture and Guilin Prefecture. Part
of the Nanyue minority gradually assimilated to Han majority. In
Sui Dynasty, Maoming County was set up. Xian Ying, the woman chief
of Li minority dedicated herself in the assimilation of Li to Han.
In Tang Dynasty, most part of the Li minority had assimilated to
Han, the other part assimilated to other minorities, naming Yao
minority and Zhuang minority and Li minority became naught. In Quanlong
Period (1736-1795) of Qing Dynasty, all the minorities in this Area
had assimilated to Han majority and were compiled to the local household
registration. Residents in this Area are all Han majority or the
descents of assimilation of Han and native minorities. March 22,
1959, the State Counsel approved to set up Maoming City. From 1983,
Maoming had the jurisdiction over 4 counties: Xinyi, Gaozhou, Dianbai
and Huazhou. In 1985, Maonan District of Maoming City was set up
and in 2001, Maogang District of Maoming City was set up. |

¡¡¡¡Maoming is developing its economy rapidly. In 1994, Maoming
became one of the 55 cities in which its GDP had been over yuan
(RMB) 20 billion. Maoming is now in an important position in the
national petrochemical industry, with crude oil refining and ethylene
processing as the lead, and is very famous in its ¡°three high agricultures¡±¡ªhigh
quantity, high quality and high efficiency, with its famous and
excellent fruits and vegetables as the lead. One of the Maoming
features is its rich mineral resources. There are 57 surveyed mines
in Maoming area. Of which, ¡°Nanyu¡± (South China jade) and kaolin
possess the striking superiority and features in their opening and
processing |

¡¡¡¡Maoming City was set up in 1959, and in 1983, it had had jurisdiction
over counties. Now, Maonan District, Maogang District, Dianbai County,
Gaozhou City and Xinyi City and Huazhou City are under its jurisdiction.

¡¡¡¡At the end of 2001, population in Maoming was 6,547,600.
Of which, 1,991,300 are of town residents and 4,556,300 of rural
ones. The birthrate and rate of natural increase are continually
decreasing.In all the Area, the worker¡¯s annual average income
is yuan (RMB) 9,619 and farmer¡¯s yuan (RMB) 3,814, with an annual
increase of 5.0%. Now in the rural area, there are 55 motor bikes,
67sets of color TV, 42 sets of telephone and 10 washing machines
in every 100 farmer families. The residents living condition is
being continually improved, with the finished private residential
area of 1,000,400 m2 in cities and towns and 6,801,300 m2 in the
countryside¡ªan average residential area of 35.38 m2 per person.
